Allan Reimer & Family

Alro Farms. Balmoral, Manitoba

As a Manitoba farmer, Allan Reimer is proud of his place in the food chain.

“I enjoy raising poultry and it is a privilege to be involved in providing healthy products to families in the community,” Reimer says. Introduced to farming by his father and grandfather more than 30 years ago, Allan, along with his wife Sharon and sons Aaron and Austin, has continued the family business. The Reimers’ 560-acre operation in Manitoba’s southern Interlake region is home to 40,000 chickens and turkeys at any given time.

“Our modern, climate-controlled facilities are designed for efficiency and to provide the cleanest, healthiest and safest conditions possible,” he says.

Allan Reimer’s daily regimen starts at 7 a.m. by making sure all the birds are comfortable in their well-ventilated environment and that their water and feed supply is plentiful. His business day includes reading up on animal nutrition and market trends to continually improve upon the product he delivers.

“I think it is important to stay informed about the latest advances and consumer preferences because we take pride in providing the best possible product,” he says. For example, after recognizing the need for poultry with even greater nutritional value, Reimer became the first Manitoba farmer to introduce flaxseed into his flock’s feed in order to offer an Omega-3 benefit in the turkeys he raises.

“My family and I enjoy eating chicken and turkey, whether it’s roasted whole, grilled on the barbecue or ground meat for burgers. And like most families, it’s important for us to know where the food we eat comes from and how it is grown,” Reimer says. “That’s why we’re so proud to be part of a community-minded group like Granny’s. It is locally owned by responsible farmers who are committed to providing top-quality poultry products, just like we are.”

As proud of his community as the co-op he supports, Reimer is a volunteer driver for a seniors’ resource organization and in his spare time, enjoys cheering on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
