When it comes to poultry products, it is important to remember to:
- CLEAN - Wash hands, utensils and kitchen surfaces thoroughly to keep everything clean and free of bacteria.
- SEPARATE - Do not let raw meat or juices touch ready-to-eat foods during either in the refrigerator or during preparation. Keep wrapped foods separate to avoid cross-contamination.
- COOK - Cook chicken and turkey to proper temperatures. The juices should run clear when the meat is pierced with a fork.
- CHILL - Refrigerate or freeze raw poultry as soon as you get home from the supermarket and always refrigerate leftovers within 1 hour.
4 Simple Rules for Safely Handling and Preparing Poultry:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with hot soapy water before and after handling meat.
- Keep raw chicken and turkey wrapped and separate from other foods in the refrigerator to eliminate the chance of cross-contamination.
- Never return cooked poultry to a plate, container or a marinade that held raw poultry.
- When finished your cooking preparations, clean all working surfaces that is one part bleach to four parts water. Leave solution on surfaces for 5 seconds then rinse thoroughly with cold water.
