Wayne Urbonas - Director, Regulatory and Industry Affairs

As Director of Regulatory and Industry Affairs, Wayne is responsible for the overall food safety, quality assurance and HACCP programs at both the Blumenort processing plant and our hatchery operations. He has been promoted to this position in January 2010, after a decade with Granny’s as a Director of Live Operations and as a Manager of Organizational Support.

Prior to joining Granny’s, Wayne had worked for 25 years in the highly competitive meat industry, starting his career as a lab technician with Swift Canadian Ltd. in the late 1970s. He subsequently moved to Burns Meats, where he stayed for 18 years in progressively more responsible positions, ultimately becoming the general manager of the Winnipeg operation. With the sale of Burns to Maple Leaf Foods, he was promoted to vice president and general manager; he continued this success at Winnipeg’s Redifoods, a position he held until coming to Granny’s.

Wayne is a founding member of the Canadian Meat Research Institute and served as its president from 1995 to 1996. He was an active member of the Canadian Meat Council for 10 years, serving as a director and an executive, including a year as president in 1995. He also sat on the council’s technical committee. He is past president of the Manitoba Food Processors Association and is active on various committees of the Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council.

Wayne is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg. During barbeque season, his favourite treat is Granny’s turkey breast, marinated and grilled to perfection.
