Quentin Wiebe

Timberline Farms, Gunton, Manitoba

“I love being close to my job. I love what I do 100%.”

Quentin Wiebe was a construction worker when, during an off-season period, he had the chance to help out in a few poultry farms. He had never been around farming but it didn’t take long for him to realize that this was the life he wanted.

When he found out there was a turkey farm for sale near Gunton Manitoba, he went to the bank and asked for a loan. According to the bank, a 20 year old with little farming experience was not the ideal candidate for a farm loan, but as Quentin tells it, he would not take no for an answer and finally won the loan officer over with his passion for the business.

Fifteen years later, Quentin is proud that Timberline Farms is a family run farm. He and wife, Theresa run the operation, and their girls Kyra and Nicole, help in the barn and yard. The couple believes that working on the farm teaches their girls not only where their food comes from and the work that goes into it, but also creates respect for the natural food cycle and a connection between the farm and the grocery store.

Quentin credits the top quality turkeys he produces to his love for the job. He says, providing clean dry environment, high air quality and litter management is important, of course, but if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t spend time with the birds. It’s the time spent respecting and caring for the birds that ensures quality. He takes pride in growing good birds and likes to see them leave the yard as clean white birds.

Timberline Farms has been a member of Granny’s poultry cooperative for 12 years and takes pride in knowing not only that they help produce a top quality product but that he shares that responsibility as part of a team.

“As producers we are not just looking out for us we are looking out for the company as well, we’re all accountable.”

Quentin feels confident suggesting Granny’s, whether you’re buying a whole bird for roasting, a skinless turkey breast or ground meat, you know that by buying a local product you’re supporting local people and keeping your money within the community.

He believes the best way to enjoy Granny’s turkey is by sharing it with family and friends.
